I suggest you have a job lined up or guarenteed before you move here.

unless money is not a problem for you, the rents and property prices are insane and there is now a recession that has just started thanks to (bin Laden)

the food prices have gone up about a month and a half now. Gas and Diesel are a bit cheaper now but rents keep going up every year.

also do what ever you can to not live near the Strathcona area it's the worst area in Vancouver (skid row) the homeless, crime, used needles and garbage everywhere. YUCK!
trendy cool areas are Yaletown (rich young prople area) Kitsilino(trendy cool for young proffessionals)
the Drive is now becoming kinda trendy but because it is in East Van and not very far from Strathcona area it has a lot of crime and drugs, it is also the most expensive area of East Van. The WEST END is for the well to do or rich people South Granville the area of old build mansions and the SNOBS I warn you if you are not dressed in quality clothes you will get nasty looks from the snobs also be prepared to be followed by the police if you just so happen to want to walk down the street in one of there nieghbourhoods ! Trust me I got followed when I was a flyer delivery person.

Forget about looking a home in POINT GREY or WEST VANCOUVER all big time rich people area like proffessoinal hockey players or actors etc..North Vancouver is pricy but similar to East Van rents

East Van is the Cheapest area in Vancouver, Burnaby is not so bad but of course that depends on the areas you want to live in there too I think the best least crime area in Burnaby is the Hights, I lives there for 6+ yrs low crime. I hope this helps narrow down the area your looking for.
