Hi, not sure if this is still relevent as your post is pretty old.

Ive been living here since June 09 and its pretty amazing, Montreal is truly bilingual and learning the language is free to new immigrants, you need to check out Immigration-Québec - Home Page

The weather here can be extream and with 4 very distinct seasons the right clothing is a must (+30 in the summer, -30 winter), however you need to embace the winter here to be able to keep your sanity. lots of Snowshoeing, skiing, sledging and snowball fights :)

The night life in Montreal is great, with some really good bars and clubs downtown and if you want to just take a walk there are a million places to go. Public transport here is second to none with Buses every 10 minutes durring the day, a great metro system intown and if you happen to live in suburbia there are very good trains direct to downtown.

We are currently living in the West Island which is a more english area and there are lots of people here who dont speak a word of french, Although if you learn some then your introgration will be a lot easier. Most jobs ask for some level of french on the application form, ive had a couple of interviews that where in a mixture of french and english and others that where just english all the way.

Another thing to remember is that unless you marry a canadian who went to school in english, your kids will have to go to french school.

    Hope it helps

Hi there Ellie, and welcome to britsabroad :)

Hopefully one of our Montreal residents will be able to supply some of the information to you; meanwhile I hope that you enjoy looking through and posting on our message boards!

    All the best
