When sponsoring a foreign national for a Swedish work permit, employers should generally request a validity period that is equal to the length of the beneficiaryís proposed assignment. In most cases, an employer will no longer be permitted to extend a work permit for an employee who has spent more than three months outside of Sweden during the validity of his or her permit unless there is a compelling business reason for the absence, the Swedish Migration Board has clarified. The new policy may require employers to change their procedures for sending foreign workers to Sweden. It has been the practice of some employers to obtain work permits for the maximum possible duration, in anticipation of sending foreign workers to Sweden for several short-term work trips over the course of the permitís validity. These arrangements may no longer be possible under the new policy.
