Can I move food and alcohol in my shipping container?

    Hello everybody,

Anybody who has read previous questions by me will know by now that I am bit of horder / somebody that can't let go.

So here is another one ....

When we are packing up our house can I pack wine or food into the container?
Again, I know it is silly but we have some special foods which we bought on holidays and family visits around Europe and I would hate having to leave them behind.

    Does anybody know?

    Thanks,
    Christine

What kind of food items are they? It may be worth checking with customs on what is and isn't allowed. I know in Australia you can bring in your alcohol but if found they will tax you on it.

Good luck with your move Christine and am sure someone who has knowledge of US will pop up and advise accordingly.

Let us know how the move goes and how you're settling in x

    Smile Link to US Customs

Just in case anybody else has questions I went to the US customs page and there is a page titled "Travelers bringing food into the U.S. for personal use"

    The link is https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/82/session/L3NpZC9TODFhdXVFaw%3D%3D/search/1

See, you answered it for yourself. If it's sealed in an original packagingand for personal use in a container, you'll be ok. Meat, fruit or perishables, no. Wine you''ll have paid duty on at the time you bought it and it'll be ok... providing they don't think you've got enough to float the ship that's carrying it.
When are you actually moving, anyway?

Cool, good luck with that. What type of visa are you using to come over here?
