Realistic timescales for moving to California

Hi everyone, I have only just registered on the forum and already getting the vibe that there are quite a lot of helpful, friendly people on this forum so looking forward to chatting to you all.

My wife and I have recently decided that we are going to take the bull by the horns and intend to move our family to California in the next 10 years.

My first question to the forum is this...do you think that 10 years is a realistic timeframe to make the move?

Following on that, are we right to begin applying for visas now or should we wait for the US economy to begin picking itself up a bit more?

Thanks for your comments in advance.

    Matt & Emma

Hi & welcome to B-A Matt & Emma.

Although there are quite a few members here that have made the decision to emigrate to the USA over the years, the stories that have been posted are that it is very hard to get into America.

Might be worth looking at old threads about moving to the US.

    Anyway i wish you luck.

American immigration is niche based. If you fit in the narrow gaps, you might have a chance. But most don't and would be better off looking at Australia, New Zealand or Canada.

Cheers for the welcome Andy, and thanks for your 'heads up'. We have our work cut out for us as I can see there are a lot of useful threads.

    Hi Matt and Emma,

I definitely think that 10 years is long enough to plan things. My wife and I are considering moving in the next 18 months.

As other people have pointed out though, the main question is whether you can move and possibly not just when.

Where in California are you hoping to move to? What sort of work are you looking to get? We too are hoping to move to California.

    All the best,

    Andrew
