We've go one of the very first Ipod classics, a nano, a touch and various Iphones, all the same connector, have a couple of Ipod docks and all fine with each other

Ours work on the docks, but on one of the docks, the iphones display a message "This accessory is not made to work with iPhone" They do still work though - charge, play music through the dock etc. Read somewhere that you sometimes get the message if the connectors are dirty/dusty. Not a major issue though.
