    Thumbs up Looking to move

    Hello,

I see a brand new forum in the making and could be a good one.

I live in the Uk at the moment and have though about migrating somewhere new.

I would like to either go to Canada or New Zealand. What do other people think. Is there anyone here who has lived in either country or both? Not too keen on the heat and being a doctor I can pretty much work where I want.

My dad worked in New Zealand for a while and absolutley loved it. He travelled a fair bit with his job around the world and he always said that if he was gonna move and live anywhere it would be New Zealand!!

Good luck with whatever you decide and welcome to the site.

    Hi

We hope to emigrate to NZ early next year once we receive our permanent residency (hopefully!!). We have two young kids.

We were thinking about Napier or Hastings area. Is anyone familiar with these areas of Hawkes Bay? Any opinions?

    Thanks.

Hi, I have just joined the forum and this is my first reply so I hope it works OK. I have a friend who was looking at Canada whislt I was looking at NZ, both beautiful places to visit. My friend was put off Canadian life as he was advised that on average the Canadian holiday entitlement is only 14 days and it appeared Canada had such a long drawn out immigration process, which I understand has been relaxed slightly recently. Good luck with your ventures.

My husband and I were granted NZ RV in May and hope to be over there in Jan 09, to join my brother and two sisters who have already jumped ship. The hardest part will be 4 leaving elderly parents on their own.

    Hi Angie

How long did it take for you to be granted your permanent residency from when you submitted all the immigration paperwork? Where are you thinking about settling?

    Hi Gavin
I know its an old thread but just in case your still considering Canada as an option we have been here for just short of 2 years in a place called Grimsby which is 20 mins from Niagara Falls and 1 hour from down town Toronto. Its a beautiful area on the Bruce Peninsula between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. To anyone from the UK these lakes are oceans.
This part of Canada has quite cold winters esp from January to March -10 to -20 with lots of snow and sunshine but its not damp so in fact feels better than UK. We had no problem with the first 2 winters as the kids loved the snow and we even tried to ski. You get the 4 seasons here and with spring and summer its wall to wall sunshine but gets into the low 30s in July / August with a few days of humidity probs. Autumn is something else with a mass of colour as the trees start to loose their leaves. Canada is so big and we have only seen a tiny bit of it It takes 2 days to drive out of Ontario to another province. I have been told Quebec is nice and British Columbia apparently once you go there you dont want to come back. North Ontario reminds me of the Scottish Highlands. We had family here so came out lots of times as tourists so we knew what to expect on arrival. Hopefully someone else who lives in other parts of Canada will contact you. You are correct there is a shortage of doctors here and a comfortable living awaits. We have been made very welcome and life is good, kids are doing well at school so there is no chance of us going back to UK but I miss my visits to Old Trafford and the local pub / curry house.
    Regards Andy

Hi Sheena thanks for that. Unfortunately my mother is not in good health, which is really hard to deal with at the moment with our move, and neither her or my dad want to live in NZ, even though my mum would like to visit again. My in laws are in better health but are looking forward to long holidays with us but have their lives in the UK. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Hi Shazniko
    dates as follows
    selected for consideration 20/9/07
    invited to apply 14/11/07
    submitted application 31/1/08
    Accepted 23/5/08

This was a very long nail biting period for us as my sister's application went through so much quicker but that was two years ago. My other sister was denied RV at first, but re-submitted with a job offer and that went through very quickly. My brother's application seemed to take the longest and he went through an agency and obvioulsy spent loads of money as well, he would advise anyone to do it themselves if they can.

My favourite sister and brother are in Auckland so that is where we will head first, as we will stay with my sister until we are settled.

How far have you got and how long has it taken you? Where do you intend to live?

    Good luck
    Angie
