The foreign office has issued the latest information and advice for British nationals in Bahrain.

Demonstrations and sporadic outbreaks of violence are continuing across Bahrain and may continue in the coming days.

Travel on the highways is severely restricted, and for the time being we are advising UK residents and UK travellers to Bahrain to avoid travelling around the island unless essential; to maintain a high level of security awareness particularly in public places and on major highways; and to avoid large gatherings, crowds and demonstrations.

Travel Summary

• There is a general threat from terrorism in Bahrain. Terrorists continue to issue statements threatening to carry out attacks in the Gulf region. These include references to attacks on western interests, including residential compounds, military, oil, transport and aviation interests.
• Demonstrations and sporadic outbreaks of violence are continuing across Bahrain and may continue in the coming days. Travel on the highways is severely restricted, and for the time being we are advising UK residents and UK travellers to Bahrain to avoid travelling around the island unless essential; to maintain a high level of security awareness particularly in public places and on major highways; and to avoid large gatherings, crowds and demonstrations.

• Bahrain operates a zero tolerance to drink/driving and views all alcohol-related incidents dimly. Travellers transiting Bahrain who are clearly intoxicated can be denied boarding and may be detained and fined by Bahraini Public Security.
• Visitors must have legal status in Bahrain when they depart. You may be prevented from departing Bahrain if you are subject to a travel ban, involved in legal proceedings, have unpaid debt, or are a child subject to a custody dispute. Visitors can incur heavy fines if they overstay or fail to extend their legal residency.
• You should take out comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling.
