      Hi Marion,
I'm in California - moved here from UK last October. My husband had a job offer here so he got H1B Visa and as his wife I'm on a H4. You need a job offer or be able to offer employment and investment for US citizens. You could come over as a student but that's not ideal for a family! There's lots of info on the web but be sure to look at the US Government websites directly or you'll just end up paying for information.
Here's a couple you could look at:

      www.unitedstatesvisas.gov

      www.usimmigrationsupport.org

Another way is if your current employer has an overseas exchange programme?

And Cal is right - don't let any setbacks put you off. It took us 2 years to get our Visas even with a job offer but if you don't try you'll always wonder 'what if..'. Best of luck!!
