Thread: Crossing the Atlantic to Calgary - In Need of British Food!!!!

Hi all,
I'm a British citizen currently looking at escaping to the promised land.
I'm currently looking at the Calagary area. However, I am going to need my Heinz Baked Beanz and HP Sauce!!! (The real stuff imported from the UK!)
I am coming over in about 2 weeks, and was wondering if there any stores which anyone can recommend in these areas for me to check out to see if they've got what they need? I don't think I could live without my creature comforts!

Hi Mark - I think the trick is to find an area with a lot of other Brits and check out their local supermarkets. We are in Ontario and the town we live in attracts a lot of Brits so the supermarkets stock Bisto, marmite and yes, Heinz Beans (although they don't taste quite the same!) The other option is to find a UK store - there is one where we live which actually imports from the UK - you can get pretty much anything - but its REALLY expensive - still worth it for that special treat if you are really missing something. For the most part, though, we have tried to go forget our British eating habits and go with what the locals get - its much cheaper, takes a lot less time to find and the cravings do reduce in time. Good luck, Canada is a great place to live - even worth giving up Baked Beans for!

There is plenty of choice here and you can find british food in most supermarkets. There is a place called British Pantry in the NW which sells loads of stuff, also a shop on 17th although a bit expensive still good.

Dear Purple,

I must be guilty of this having posted a 'link' in order to HELP a subscriber with a Brit related food enquiry. I hardly see this as advertising as I have know personal connection whatsoever to this business in
Nova Scotia, Canada , while presently I live in Florida. This is pure information and I find cutting & pasting a pertinent link the easiest and most accurate way of imparting this knowledge.
They don't call it the 'Information Highway" for nothing. How would you suggest recommending a business or service without 'breaking the rules' ?

I'll try and answer your question and clear things up for you, and maybe any others that wish to read this.

There's a difference between posting a website for information once in a thread to help people out, and posting the same website link 3 times in a row when that poster has never posted anything before.
There are sticky threads at the top of the sections regarding spamming and multiple postings, and people need to make themselves aware of that, or they'll find themselves getting an infraction or a ban.

You guys don't necessarily see all the spam messages that the forum staff delete, and if we left every website that people "endorse" on the boards, there wouldn't be much room for people with genuine questions. This forum is no different than any other when it comes to spam. If a brand new member posting a link to the same website over and over again without ever posting a question or entering into any other kind of discussion, then it will be assumed that they are spammers, that's the way it is. Multiple endorsements and posting links to the same website will be seen as a violation of forum rules.

Official websites are perfectly acceptable, but multiple links to money making websites are not permitted.
The message boards are not a venue for free advertising.

I don't make the rules up, I just moderate the forum for the person that does, to the best of my ability.

Hi UK Mark, I have lived in Alberta for 7 years now and i can tell you that you get very used to the food here, i found that Wal-Marts own brand Baked Beans are totally like the Heinz ones, and i honestly cannot tell you the difference between the brown sauce here and the brown sauce in the UK, after a little adjusment you just get use to it, i found 2 things the hardest to get use to and thats the tea (it's all orange pekoe here) but i just saw Yorkshire tea sold in London Drugs and the Superstore sell black tea too and the Sausages, the latter we fixed, you can buy Brit sausages from a company called Great British Sausage Company from Lethbridge, there on Facebook and they stock in the Scottish Shoppe on 17th Ave SW.....hope this helps enjoy living in this wonderful country!
