Thread: Unemployment continues to rise back in the UK

I'm afraid again it is not restricted to the UK by any means. Almost all industrialized countries has been going through the same thing at different times. A few years ago jobs were far more numerous in the UK but these things are cyclical. This country has been through the same high unemployment issues as well and no doubt will again. For many many people Britain is still great. I'm not sure why it would make you depressed really ? It's one of those things that affects all countries. I have lived in Australia a long time and have seen recessions come and go and have lived through them in the UK as well. Nothing makes me think this one is going to be any different quite honestly.

Can recall several times when I was offered 3 different jobs in the same week and I used to think THAT was a dilemma!! Would be wonderful to return the 'Great' back into Britain but sadly feel it's the end of an era.

I'd agree with what you said there. Nothing about the recession we're going through is isolated to one place, and things will eventually improve economically. It's a global downturn in a global economy.
The UK economy has actually been improving faster than the US over the last 2 months.

A friend of mine just emailed me this one, and I know some of you will find the humour in it .. could kind of apply to the US too, except they'd have to add "keep your nose out of other people's countries" at the end.

      Dear Mr. Cameron,

Please find below our suggestion for fixing the UK's economy.

Instead of giving billions of pounds to banks that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan.

You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan:

There are about 10 million people over 50 in the work force.

Pay them £1 million each severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

      1) They MUST retire.

Ten million job openings - unemployment fixed

      2) They MUST buy a new British car.

Ten million cars ordered - Car Industry fixed

      3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage -

      Housing Crisis fixed

      4) They MUST send their kids toschool/college/university -

      Crime rate fixed

      5) They MUST buy £100 WORTH of alcohol/tobacco a week .....

And there's your money back in duty/tax etc

      6) Instead of messing about around with the carbon emissions trading scheme that makes us pay for the major polluters, tell the greedy sods to reduce their pollution emissions by 75% within 5 years or we'll shut them down.

      It can't get any easier!

P.S. If more money is needed, have all members of parliament pay back their falsely claimed expenses and second home allowances.

I guess if it was a bed of roses there then even the Australian government wouldn't have had to implement billions of dollars in a stimulus package over the last couple of years, just as other countries have had to do. Fortunately for them it seems to have worked. but there's still the question for me.. where's that money coming from and when will it eventually need to be "paid back" into the system?
Food for thought is is the Chinese economy goes south as is entitrely possible, then the Aussie economy will almost doubtedly be affected negatively.

Australia had a downturn last year and cut back on immigration................... because they are in charge of their own country and when things got tough they took action, but whatever they did it worked because............. they never went into recession. What happens to Australia in the future is unpredictable, but currently things are going well there, i'm not saying it is perfect, i know its not as easy as............ just migrating there and you will walk into a good well paid job, but with just 5% unemployed, its sure better there than most other countries in the world at present.

Yes Australia technically avoided a recession by basically pouring money into the economy, it's certainly no secret that we would have gone into recession without the handouts. All the money will have to be paid back in time.
Our economy relies far too much on China, if they sneeze we catch a huge cold.
